What is the DTA JP1?

The JP1 is a two-seater personal eVTOL: an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft you own and fly yourself. Eight rotors, a whole-airframe ballistic parachute, and a hybrid powertrain that delivers two full hours of flight with two people on board. It is built by DTA Aircraft, a French manufacturer that has been building aircraft since 1990.

How long can the JP1 fly, and how far?

Accepted Answer

Two full hours with two people on board, and up to three hours flown solo. In distance, up to 180 miles with a passenger and up to 270 miles solo. The two hour figure is the loaded number, not a best case: it is the endurance at full payload, which is how the aircraft is actually flown. Pure electric eVTOLs in the same two-seater bracket stay under an hour.

What fuel does it use?

Jet fuel: Jet A-1, and JP-5 or JP-8. Sustainable Aviation Fuel drops straight in with no modification. Jet A is the most widely distributed aviation fuel in the world, it is sold at effectively every airport, it costs less than 100LL avgas in the US, and it contains no lead. Refueling takes minutes, like filling a car, against the 30 to 90 minute charging cycle a pure electric aircraft needs between flights.

DTA has been building aircraft in France since 1990. The JP1 is designed in France and produced in the USA: it will be assembled in Arizona, where DTA has its US home base at Scottsdale.

How do I reserve one, and is the deposit refundable?

Accepted Answer

There is one pre-order and one price. A $12,000 deposit holds your chassis number and your production slot, and it counts toward the price of the aircraft, which is $385,000 and is locked for you at the figure in effect on the day your deposit is received. Chassis 1 to 50 are the Launch Edition: delivery in 2028 rather than 2029, an engraved cockpit plate carrying your number, an invitation to the Phoenix assembly line to see that chassis being built, and allocation priority on what DTA brings to market afterwards. The edition closes at chassis 50 and does not reopen. The production deposit, 60% of the aircraft price, falls due one month before the aircraft enters production, and the balance before delivery. Most of the deposit is refundable: $2,000 of the $12,000 is not, and the rest comes back if you cancel.

How much does a personal eVTOL cost?

The DTA JP1 is $385,000. Across the two-seater eVTOL market, a credible aircraft lands around $400,000 once it is equipped and delivered. Anything advertised well below is a single-seat ultralight, which is not certified and not allowed to carry a passenger. For comparison, a new two-seater piston helicopter sells around $375,000.

Where do I keep it? Do I need a hangar?

You keep it at home. The aircraft folds from 10 ft to 8 ft, the road-legal trailer width in the US, Europe, the UAE, Brazil and India, so you tow it behind a vehicle like a boat. Motorized rear wheels let it taxi under its own power into a garage or across a yard with the propellers stopped. No hangar rent, no hangar waitlist.

DTA stands up a factory-trained maintenance presence in the launch market, Arizona, before the first deliveries. The eight-motor electric architecture has fewer wear-critical parts than a piston helicopter drivetrain, and the worldwide DTA spare parts network already serving 595+ aircraft across 33+ countries backs it.

Do I need a pilot's license to fly the JP1?

Yes. You fly it as a Sport Pilot under the FAA's MOSAIC rule, in force since July 24, 2026: about 20 hours of training, no FAA medical exam, and a valid driver's license covers the medical privilege. If you already hold an FAA pilot certificate, you exercise Sport Pilot privileges on the certificate you have. Anyone claiming a personal aircraft needs no license at all is describing a single-seat ultralight, which cannot carry a passenger.

What is the FAA MOSAIC rule?

MOSAIC is the FAA framework that modernized the Light Sport Aircraft category. The final rule was published on July 24, 2025, the sport pilot and maintenance provisions took effect on October 22, 2025, and the Light Sport Aircraft certification provisions have been in force since July 24, 2026. It removes the old takeoff weight limit, allows higher stall and cruise speeds, and expands Sport Pilot privileges to heavier and more capable aircraft. That is what makes an aircraft like the JP1 eligible, and flyable by a Sport Pilot carrying a passenger.

Is the JP1 certified?

Not yet. The JP1 is on a Light Sport Aircraft certification path under MOSAIC. DTA's gyroplanes have been FAA compliant for years and hold DULV certification in Europe, but that record belongs to the gyroplanes, not to the JP1, and we do not blur the two.

How much does it cost to learn to fly it?

About 20 hours of training under the Sport Pilot rules, taken at a partner flight school. If you already hold an FAA certificate, you need transition training on the type, not a full course. Training is not included with the aircraft, and the price depends on the school, so ask your partner school for its quote: we do not publish a figure we do not set.

Do I fly it, or does it fly itself?

You fly it. The autopilot is the primary controller: you express intent, direction, altitude, landing, and the aircraft handles stabilization and the control surfaces. You make the decisions, the aircraft executes them. It is not an autonomous aircraft and it is not a passenger drone.

How does the JP1 see other aircraft and obstacles?

The JP1 carries ADS-B, the traffic surveillance system used by general aviation in the United States, together with a Mode S transponder: controllers and other aircraft see the JP1, and the JP1 sees them. The autopilot reads that traffic picture and resolves a converging conflict automatically, and the pilot can take over at any moment. For the ground, a LiDAR sensor reads the exact height above terrain on approach, assesses the landing zone for slope and obstacles, and detects wires and power lines in low-level flight. As on any aircraft, the pilot remains responsible for separation.

Is an eVTOL safer than a helicopter?

The JP1 is built around redundancy a two-seater piston helicopter does not have. It flies on eight rotors and keeps flying with up to four propeller failures, as long as each boom keeps one working propeller, where a piston helicopter has one engine. It carries a whole-airframe ballistic parachute that brings the entire aircraft down under one canopy. And an autopilot handles stabilization, so it does not demand the continuous stick and pedal coordination that makes helicopters demanding to fly. Same missions, a structurally safer machine, and far easier to learn.

What happens if a motor fails?

The JP1 flies on eight rotors across four booms and stays operational with up to four propeller failures, provided each boom keeps one working propeller. Four battery packs feed the rotors in a crossed layout, so a single pack failure never takes out two rotors on the same side. If everything fails at once, the whole-airframe ballistic parachute brings the aircraft down under one canopy.

What happens if you pull the parachute?

The entire aircraft comes down under one canopy, the same principle as the Cirrus CAPS system in general aviation, applied to a much lighter aircraft. You will probably damage the aircraft. You will not be the one who is damaged.
